Etwall Lions Roar to Success!
The inaugural South Derbyshire “Back to Netball” tournament took place on Saturday 12th May. It was organised as part of the “Healthier South Derbyshire” event at Etwall Leisure centre.
Eight teams from Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Nottinghamshire took part in a friendly, fun filled event. Every match was highly competitive, but always played in the right spirit with teams playing for a top two place within their pool to secure their place in the semi-finals.
The first semi final was an absolute cracker and after 10 minutes of normal time Ashby NC and NUH All Stars couldn't be separated, with the scores locked at 1-1. Into the first round of 2 minutes extra time and it was NUH who took a one goal advantage early on, only for Ashby to claw it back and level once again. The teams then set themselves for another period of extra time and after a scoreless period the scores remained tied at 2-2. So into sudden death they went with NUH coming out on top after a fantastic shot from distance by one of their shooters, so booking their place in the final.
The second semi final was hotly contested between two local teams Etwall Lions and Etwalls Finest, with the Lions progressing.
The final was a great spectacle and hard fought between the NUH All Stars and Etwall Lions. It was evenly matched after the first period, however on home turf it was the Lions who had the upper–hand in the final period eventually coming out on top as winners.
“It was a fantastic event and the standard of netball was very high, considering some teams had been playing for just a few months” – Julian Taylor, Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire NDO, England Netball.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to all the teams for taking part in the tournament and making it a huge success and we look forward to holding another one in the Autumn” - Marc Scott, Play & Club Development Officer, South Derbyshire Sport.
